A Taste of Normandy

A Taste of Normandy

About This Cruise

This eight-day river cruise takes you from Paris through the scenic Seine Valley to the Normandy coast and back to the French capital. Your journey begins in Paris, where the ship sets sail in the evening and heads west towards the picturesque landscapes beyond the city. By the following morning, you arrive in Les Andelys, one of the most beautiful places along the Seine. High above the river stand the impressive ruins of Château Gaillard, a reminder of Richard the Lionheart and the region’s turbulent medieval history. Green slopes, chalk cliffs and the peaceful riverside setting give Les Andelys a particularly romantic character.

In the evening, the cruise reaches Rouen, the historic capital of Normandy. The city enchants with half-timbered houses, winding streets and remarkable churches. Its magnificent Notre-Dame Cathedral is one of Rouen’s most famous landmarks, while the story of Joan of Arc remains closely linked with the city. On Day 3, there is still time to explore before the ship continues at midday to Caudebec. This charming riverside town offers a quieter glimpse of the Normandy Seine Valley and makes a delightful contrast to the larger cities along the route.

In the early morning of Day 4, the ship arrives in Le Havre near the mouth of the Seine. A long stay gives you plenty of time to experience the maritime side of Normandy. This important port city combines broad coastal horizons with striking modern architecture. Reconstructed after the Second World War under the direction of Auguste Perret, Le Havre’s city centre is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The extended stay provides ample opportunity to discover both the city itself and the distinctive atmosphere of the estuary.

On Day 5, the return journey upstream begins. Vernon is the next attractive stop in the Seine Valley, a historic town with a picturesque riverside setting and a relaxed atmosphere. From here, the ship continues towards Paris, arriving during the night before Day 7.

The final part of the cruise gives you generous time to enjoy the French capital once more. Admire the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, stroll along the Seine or explore the city’s distinctive neighbourhoods. Combining historic towns, maritime landscapes, peaceful river scenery and the elegance of Paris, this journey offers a wonderfully varied introduction to northern France.

Itinerary

France

Paris

To this day, Paris remains perhaps the most sought-after destination for travelers from all over the world. And quite rightly so, since no other city in the world so perfectly embodies love, seduction, art, culture, and cuisine. Paris is the city of life’s finer things. It all starts with the beauty of the French capital itself, which is best experienced from the observation decks of the Eiffel Tower or the hill of Montmartre. The city on the Seine offers so many beautiful views that it’s hard to decide which direction to point your camera first. But even up close, the city’s landmarks are hard to beat in terms of beauty. The ornate Notre-Dame Cathedral; the imposing Arc de Triomphe; the sprawling Louvre; the magnificent Jardin des Tuileries; the opulent Opéra Garnier; and the impressive Place de la Concorde are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the sights you can marvel at in Paris.

France

Les Andelys

Les Andelys is a municipality in France located in the Normandy region. The town is divided into a larger and a smaller part (Le Petit Andely and Le Grand Andely). The smaller part lies directly on the Seine. The region’s northern character is also reflected in the town’s architecture. This is evident, for example, in the 13th-century Notre-Dame Cathedral. The Tolysland amusement park is popular with visitors of all ages.

France

Rouen

The city of Rouen is the historic capital of Normandy and is best known for Joan of Arc. In the museum "Joan of Arc" you can find an insight into her life and her tragic death in Rouen. Also worth seeing are the botanical garden, the cathedral "Notre Dame" and the monastery "Saint-Georges de Boscherville". Very popular is also a visit to the clock tower in the charming downtown area of the town.

France

Caudebec-en-Caux

The idyllically situated village of Caudebec-en-Caux boasts several historically significant buildings, such as the 12th-century House of the Knights Templar, and is characterized by a very charming atmosphere. The local church, with its highly artistic stained-glass windows, is also a worthwhile destination; it impresses with its extraordinary architecture and is a must-see during any visit to Caudebec. Just outside town, a massive aircraft monument commemorates the Latham 47 flying boat.

France

Le Havre

With more than 170,000 residents, Le Havre is the most vibrant city in Normandy. Located directly on the English Channel, this metropolis lies in northwestern France. Thanks to the work of architect Auguste Perret, the city center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique architecture. In the heart of the city stands St. Joseph’s Church, an imposing structure featuring several thousand glass blocks. Le Havre’s city hall, with its tower rising more than 70 meters high, is also impressive. No city hall square in all of Europe is larger than the one in this French city.

France

Vernon

Vernon lies halfway between Paris and Rouen. Countless half-timbered houses characterize the townscape. The most famous one can be seen during a stroll across the Pont Clémenceau: the Old Mill, which gracefully perches atop the remains of a medieval bridge. Claude Monet was so captivated by the view of Vernon that he captured it on canvas. But that’s not all: for more than 40 years, the artist lived nearby in a house surrounded by magnificent gardens. What once inspired Monet to create world-famous works is now a paradise for flower lovers and those seeking relaxation.
