All the Way to the Black Sea

About This Cruise

A grand Danube journey with new horizons: VIVA TWO takes you on a fifteen-night round trip from Passau as far as Romania. In late spring, summer or early autumn, discover the variety of eight countries along the route. Vienna opens the city visits, before an excursion option from Solt leads into the Puszta. Belgrade follows with a programme centred on Beli Dvor and a planned lecture on the history of former Yugoslavia. A sailing day takes you through the Iron Gates region towards the lower Danube. Hârșova becomes the starting point for boat excursions into the Danube Delta, while a presentation explores its biodiversity. From Fetești, an optional excursion introduces Constanța and the Black Sea, adding a coastal visit to your river journey. Further excursion options explore Bucharest, monasteries or Veliko Tarnovo, and the fortress and rock formations of Belogradchik. On the return journey, Lepenski Vir and Golubac offer insights into the region before Vukovar, Budapest, Bratislava and Melk. Between ports, take in the changing landscapes and enjoy time for conversation and relaxation. Folklore in Belgrade and Budapest and a Signature Dinner feature in the planned programme. Sixteen days bring together capitals, nature and regional culture. Whether you choose guided excursions or shape your stays independently, this voyage opens up a broad view of the Danube and the people and places along its banks. Let each destination add another perspective to your experience of the river.

Itinerary

Germany

Passau

Thanks to its unique geographical location at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, Passau is undoubtedly one of Germany’s most unique cities. But it’s not just the location of this “City of Three Rivers” that is extraordinary—Passau also offers its visitors numerous remarkable sights. Towering over the city is the Veste Oberhaus, an impressive 13th-century fortress. Passau’s Old Town is known for its beautiful Baroque architecture, most notably St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its distinctive onion domes and the world’s largest cathedral organ, featuring nearly 18,000 pipes.

Austria

Vienna

Austria’s capital is one of those cities that every traveler should visit at least once in their lifetime. Hardly any other city in the world offers such an enchanting combination of magnificent architecture, world-famous museums and theaters, and beautiful green spaces. It’s no wonder that Vienna’s entire city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vienna is known worldwide for its palaces of emperors, kings, and nobles, such as Schönbrunn Palace, the Belvedere, and the Hofburg. But the city’s many churches—especially St. Stephen’s Cathedral, its iconic landmark—are also well worth a visit. Museum lovers will certainly get their money’s worth at the city’s numerous world-class museums, such as the Albertina, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Leopold Museum.

Hungary

Solt

The city of Solt is located in the eastern part of Hungary and lies directly on the Danube. It is a central shipping junction for the cities of Budapest and Baja. The town is surrounded by pastures and fields where gray cattle and sheep graze. It is especially impressive to look at the wild horses of the Puszta. Many surrounding horse farms offer guided tours on horseback or by carriage. The craftsman's farm, not far from Solt, shows its visitors old handicrafts.

Serbia

Belgrade

The “White City”—as the Serbian name Belgrade, is anything but colorless. Its turbulent pastshapes this Balkan metropolis. The scars of that era are just as much a part of the cityscape as the spirit of optimism that can be felt and seen. Belgrade is home to about 1.7 million residents—and, with the monumental Cathedral of Saint Sava, is home to one one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. A stroll down the shopping street Knez Mihailova with its shops, cafés, and an exciting mix of architectural styles leads straight to the Belgrade Fortress. Here, you can not only view down to the mouth of the Sava River, but also the tranquility of the sprawling Kalemegdan Park.

While our ship comfortably takes you from one city to the next, you can enjoy your time on deck and relax as the scenery passes by.

Bulgaria

Ruse

The city of Russe is located in northern Bulgaria, on the border with Romania, and is known for its industry as well as for its opera and theater. The city is home to modern universities, museums, and a television tower. Situated directly on the Danube, it serves as a starting point for several Danube river cruises. If you’d like to be enchanted by an underground world, take a tour of the Orlova Chuka Cave, one of the most popular caves in Eastern Europe.

Romania

Hârsova

No summary for this day yet.

Romania

Fetesti

If the words of a legend are to be believed, the city’s name is derived from the Romanian “satul cu fete,” which translates to “the village with the girls.” Fetesti, located in the Wallachian Plain of Romania, is best known for the Anghel Saligny Bridge, which was inaugurated by King Carl I. The bridge was built for the railroad line from Fetesti to Cernavoda and is perfect for a day trip.

Bulgaria

Vidin

The Bulgarian city of Vidin is located in the northwest of the country on the Danube River. It is considered one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria and you can find many influences of both Celts and Romans and Ottomans in the city. Worth seeing is especially the medieval fortress from the 13th century called "Baba Vida". Also a visit to the cathedral "Sveti Dimitir" or the mosque "Mustafa-Pasha" are recommended..

Serbia

Donji Milanovac

The small town of Donji Milanovac in eastern Serbia lies directly on the right bank of the Danube. When the dam and hydroelectric power plant were built in 1970, the town had to be relocated to higher ground. This was already the second relocation; the first took place in 1830, when the town was moved from the Danube Island to a higher location due to frequent flooding. North of Donji Milanovac, visitors can explore the approximately 9,000-year-old archaeological site of Lepenski Vir, dating from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods.

Croatia

Vukovar

The Croatian city of Vukovar is located in the eastern part of the country and is characterized by the Baroque era. The city’s historic center is therefore well worth a visit. The Grand Hotel “Radnicki dom” is also very well known. Don’t miss the Baroque Eltz Castle and Croatia’s oldest and most famous water tower. A stop at St. Philip’s Church and the adjacent Franciscan monastery is also highly recommended.

Hungary

Budapest

“Pearl of the Danube” or perhaps “Paris of the East”? One thing is certain: Budapest has so much to offer! Even from a distance, the Parliament Building, situated on the riverbank, greets visitors and allows the Hungarian capital to shine in its former glory. The imposing Chain Bridge invites you to explore the Buda and Pest districts, which are adorned with Art Nouveau buildings, wide boulevards, and historic thermal baths. After enjoying a slice of the famous Baumkuchen, you can appreciate the breathtaking view from Castle Hill—with its Royal Palace and the impressive Fisherman’s Bastion—even more.

Slovakia

Bratislava

The capital of Slovakia lies on the border with Austria and Hungary. Approximately 450,000 people live there. Bratislava’s Old Town dates back to the 18th century and, thanks to its car-free zone, is perfect for strolling. The city’s famous dark beer is served in the local cafés and bars. Perched on a hill is Bratislava’s landmark—Bratislava Castle. From its terrace, you have the best view of the city and the Danube.

Austria

Melk

Melk has earned itself a lovely nickname: the gateway to the Wachau. Anyone approaching this historic town along the Danube will soon spot Melk Abbey, which towers high above the river. The abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is worth a visit in every season. This impressive Baroque complex has been cared for by monks of the Benedictine Order since 1089. Culture, faith, and scholarship come together in the monastery’s magnificent halls.
