If you’re not afraid of heights, you should definitely climb the 332 steps up to the observation deck to catch a glimpse of the Vosges and the Black Forest in the distance.

The charming little town of Miltenberg first appeared in historical records as early as 1237 and soon achieved considerable prosperity. Situated on a bend in the Main River, this small town enchants visitors with its exquisite half-timbered architecture, the famous “Schnatterloch” gate tower, and what is likely Germany’s oldest inn. Wallenstein once stayed here. Imposing half-timbered gables form the distinctive backdrop of the medieval market square. Mildenburg Castle towers over the idyllic town from the hilltop. The Romans had advanced as far as this point along the Main River and secured this strategically important location with a fort.

Wertheim

The small town of Wertheim is located where the Tauber River flows into the Main. Magnificent half-timbered buildings characterize the market square. Among the town’s attractions is the parish church, which dates back to the Gothic period. Inside, the Counts of Wertheim—who ruled here from the 15th to the 18th century—have found their final resting place. Other tourist attractions include the Glass Museum and a stately castle that towers over the town from a hilltop.

Würzburg

High above the Main River stands the city’s landmark, visible from afar: Marienberg Fortress. For centuries, it served as the seat of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. Even a stroll across the Old Main Bridge, with its oversized stone figures, is an experience in itself. From Marienberg, a magnificent panoramic view opens up over the vineyards and the towers of some 60 churches. The Würzburg Residence, the city palace of the prince-bishops, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as early as 1981. During a visit to the Baroque palace complex on the outskirts of downtown, the Hofgarten reveals itself as a green jewel.

Marktbreit am Main

The town of Marktbreit is located in the southern part of the Main Triangle on the left bank of the Main River. Thanks to its dry and warm climate, the area is considered one of Franconia’s most productive wine-growing regions. Many inns therefore invite visitors to enjoy a leisurely wine tasting.Marktbreit’s historic old town is a designated historic preservation area. Everywhere you turn, you’ll encounter the town’s fascinating history, well-preserved half-timbered houses, and numerous museums. One of these is located to the left of the old city gate in the Malerwinkelhaus. Its beautifully restored façade is one of the most stunning and most-photographed views in the city.Definitely worth seeing are both the towering Seinsheim Castle, built in 1585, and the Main Gate with the Renaissance town hall. On the Römerberg stands the Moritz Chapel, a former medieval pilgrimage church that was rebuilt in the 20th century.Of the former synagogue of Marktbreit’s Jewish congregation, only the facade and the entrance portal have survived. The rest of the building was destroyed during Kristallnacht. A commemorative plaque marks the site.

Bamberg

The UNESCO World Heritage city of Bamberg enchants its visitors with a stunning old town that invites you to stroll and explore. The Sandstrasse, the city’s most famous street, runs through the old town and is home to the Schlenkerla Brewery, which has been in operation since 1405. The brewery’s restaurant is legendary, and here locals and tourists alike enjoy themselves over Rauchbier and Bamberg-style onion dishes. Towering above Sandstrasse is the Romanesque Bamberg Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George. It is known as the Imperial Cathedral because the imperial couple, Henry and Kunigunde, are buried here. The Imperial Cathedral also houses the only papal tomb north of the Alps.
