And right in the middle of it all: plenty of green space and the Rhine with its riverside promenade, perfect for taking a deep breath. No wonder the VIVA family feels right at home here!

Andernach

Andernach is situated in an idyllic setting on the left bank of the Rhine and is one of Germany’s oldest cities. Its history, spanning over 2,000 years, has left numerous traces that can be explored on a sightseeing tour during our shore excursion. One highlight is the stone harbor gantry crane (Alter Krahnen) from the 16th century, which was used to load heavy cargo onto Rhine ships. The so-called Round Tower on the city wall also dates from the same period and is actually the tallest of its kind on the Rhine. The main entrance to the city from the river during the Middle Ages was the Kornpforte, which was built as early as around the year 1200. On a stroll through the alleys of Andernach, you’ll repeatedly come across interesting historical landmarks, but the city also boasts a completely different and special attraction. Here, you can admire the world’s tallest cold-water geyser. Every two hours, it shoots a fountain of water 60 meters high into the air—a truly unique experience!

Koblenz

Koblenz captivates visitors with its unique location at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. The first stop on any visit to the city should therefore be the so-called “Deutsches Eck” with its imposing Kaiser Wilhelm Monument. Since 2002, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Upper Middle Rhine Valley.” A visit to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress offers a beautiful view of Koblenz and its two rivers. Perched 120 meters above the Rhine, this 16th-century fortification is the second-largest surviving fortress in Europe. Even the ride up in a cable car gondola is spectacular.

Cochem is Germany’s smallest county seat and is located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Cochem lies on the Moselle River and is famous for its winegrowing. The town offers a picturesque view of the vineyards. Even from a distance, the Reichsburg Castle is clearly visible and serves as the town’s landmark. The town is popular not only with bowling clubs and families. The cobblestone-paved old town offers a pleasant stroll and invites visitors to linger by the fountain.

Rüdesheim

The picturesque town of Rüdesheim is located right on the Rhine in Hesse and boasts numerous attractions, such as the famous Drosselgasse, which is lined with wine bars, as well as a castle and a torture museum that displays medieval instruments of torture and tells the history of the Inquisition. A cable car takes you up to the Niederwald Monument, which is located above the town. From here, you can take a beautiful hike through pristine forest areas and then reach the chairlift that leads directly to Assmannshausen. This town is also located on the Rhine.

The 2000-year-old Speyer resembles a single open-air museum: Salian history at every turn. The cathedral city on the Rhine is proud of its favorable location in the heart of Europe. The many-towered silhouette of the mighty red sandstone cathedral towers over the city. Anyone visiting the cathedral should also descend the steps to the imperial crypt. The most important sights of the old imperial city are almost all located in the city center, which makes it possible to admire them during a nice walk through the city. Those who are tired of walking can stop in one of the countless restaurants and cafes.
