Costa Rica by Sea: Wildlife and Rainforests of the Pacific Coast – with Smithsonian Journeys

About This Cruise

In alliance with Smithsonian Journeys.

This cruise is part of a collection of PONANT voyages that are specially-tailored for English-speaking travelers who want to engage with the world. In addition to the usual elements of the PONANT experience, the listed price for these voyages includes transfers to and from the ship, talks and discussions aboard ship by world class experts, and a shore excursion or activity in each port of call that encourages guests to embrace the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of the local environment and culture.

Costa Rica has done more than any other Central American country to preserve and protect its natural treasures, and this voyage takes full advantage of the results, as we explore the luxuriant tropical vegetation and fascinating fauna that inhabit this remarkable country. Cruising up and down Costa Rica's Pacific coast, our itinerary focuses attention, first, on the Osa Peninsula, described as one of the most biologically intense regions on earth, and then on the parks in and around the Gulf of Nicoya, including iconic Manuel Antonio National Park.

Depart from San José airport for embarkation in Puntarenas. Sail southward along Costa Rica's Pacific Coast to call at Puerto Jiminez, to explore the rich biodiversity of the Osa Peninsula. You may visit a cacao farm to learn about the production of chocolate or join a guided walk through La Perica garden, showcasing sloths in their natural environment. If you prefer to be on the water, you may choose a guided kayaking adventure through the mangrove, or board a local catamaran and cruise one of the most biologically diverse marine ecosystems in the world.

From the waters of Golfo Dulce, land at Playa San Josecito. Explore Dolfin Quest, a private botanical sanctuary. where the ship’s naturalists lead walks through the lush tropical gardens and the surrounding rainforest, watching for a remarkable variety of plants and trees, as well as hummingbirds, iguanas, and tropical birds.

Day four of the voyage finds you at Manuel Antonio National Park, the crown jewel of Costa Rica's parks and reserves, where you may join a naturalist-guided tour of this remarkable place, where the rainforest meets the beaches, to search for the amazing variety of terrestrial wildlife and birdlife that calls the park home. Other options for the day include a boat cruise through the mangrove of the Damas Islands Estuary; a walk along the Rio Seco that leads to an inviting waterfall; and a rafting adventure down the Savegre River.

Bahia Coco, the northernmost point of the voyage, offers a choice of excursions into the interior, both of which include a lunch of Costa Rican specialties. One takes you to the Vandara Hot Springs, where you are invited to soak in mineral-rich waters and luxuriate in a mud bath. The other explores Rincón de la Vieja National Park, with its volcanic landscape of bubbling muds and fumaroles. For those who prefer to stay near the coast, a catamaran cruise of the bay, including time for swimming and snorkeling, will also be available.

At the mouth of the Gulf of Nicoya, Playa Mantas is your gateway to Carara National Park and the Tarcoles River. Choose between an easy walk on beautifully maintained paths in the park, famous for its population of brilliant scarlet macaws, or a cruise through dense mangrove along the banks of the river that is famously home to large colonies of crocodiles. Alternatively—for a completely different perspective on the jungle—visit the Tropical Forest Skywalk, where elevated walkways, and suspension bridges allow you to literally walk through the treetops and observe life in the forest canopy.

The final day of your voyage begins with a morning of discovery at the Curú Wildlife Refuge, the oldest protected park in Costa Rica and a research center for scientists from around the world. The forest here is home to Costa Rica's most emblematic species—spider monkeys, scarlet macaws, sloths, and iguanas—as well as more than 200 species of birds. During lunch aboard ship, your ship sails to Tortuga Island for an afternoon of lazing on the beach, before continuing to Puntarenas.

The encounters with the wildlife described above illustrate possible experiences only and cannot be guaranteed.

Costa Rica

Puntarenas

This town is not on the Nicoya Peninsula, but rather on Costa Rica's mainland. It is best known as a cruise-ship port and launching pad for ferries heading southeast to the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula and for cruises sailing out on the Gulf of Nicoya. Puntarenas is also a major fishing port with a lively fish market. The town’s reputation suffers from the unimpressive parts you see from your car as you roll through town on the way to the ferry dock. But the town has a lot of character off the main drag, thanks to its illustrious past as an affluent port town and principal vacation spot for San José's wealthy, who arrived by train in the last century. Once the port was moved and roads opened to other beaches, Puntarenas's economy crashed, but it's making a comeback. Sitting on a narrow spit of sand—punta de arenas literally means "point of sand"—that protrudes into the Gulf of Nicoya, the town boasts a beautifully groomed, wide Blue Flag beach with views of the Nicoya Peninsula and spectacular sunsets, along with a public swimming pool, the San Lucas Beach Club, and a marine-life museum. Ticos arrive by bus and car to enjoy the beach and stroll the Paseo de los Turistas, a beachfront promenade lined with tree-shaded concrete benches and seafood restaurants. Crowds of locals, called porteños, cruise by on bicycles, the town’s most popular form of transport.

Cocos Island

Cocos Island (Isla del Coco in Spanish) is an uninhabited island located off the shore of Costa Rica. It is a National & Marine Park and UNESCO World Heritage site and is surrounded by deep waters with counter-currents, offering excellent environments for many different species of fish. The beauty of Cocos has inspired tales of pirate treasure and the island was one of Jacques Cousteau’s favorite places. Seabirds also favor Isla del Coco including Brown boobies, Red-footed Boobies and Great Frigatebirds. The three endemic land bird species call the island home; the Cocos Cuckoo, Cocos flycatcher, and Cocos finch.

Costa Rica

Curú Wildlife Refuge

Located on the southeast tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, the Curu Wildlife Refuge is known for its pristine, white-sand beaches and impressive variety of species ranging from monkeys to sand crabs. In total the refuge covers 3,707 total acres and 656 feet of coastline. Travelers to the Curu Wildlife Refuge will quickly notice that they are in the minority at the site, with only a few people in the area among the abundance of animals and sea creatures. All of your senses will be captivated by this overwhelming amount of wildlife at the reserve, which offers some of the best eco-tourism in Costa Rica. Curu officially received support from the Costa Rican government to protect its wildlife in 1981 and the area officially became known as the Curu Wildlife Refuge in 1983. Today, the refuge is privately owned, extremely-well cared for and even more exclusive than many of the national parks in the country. If you're looking to participate in some of the vast eco-tourism opportunities in Costa Rica, the refuge should be a top priority because of its exclusivity and the ability of visitors to personally interact with the diverse animal population. The refuge also features 17 peaceful trails, where travellers can check out this abundant wildlife in a number of different ecosystems, including mangrove swamps and both dry and wet tropical forests.

Costa Rica

Tortuga Island

Named after its turtle-shaped volcanic rock formations, Isla Tortuga is a small island set just off the tip of Nicoya Peninsula’s southern coast. The island offers a unique combination of white pristine beaches, palm trees, red volcanic rocks, verdant jungles and sparkling crystals that line the shores. Sunlight reaches right through the crystal clear waters at Isla Tortuga, making it a sought-after destination for snorkelers and scuba divers. Just east of the island is the Curu Wildlife Refuge offers some of the region’s best wildlife watching, including sightings of capuchin and howler monkeys, river otters, and deer on the ground, and a diverse ecology of underwater wildlife that can be accessed via snorkeling. Most commonly seen species are mantarays, reef sharks, octupus, stingrays, angle fish and spinner dolphins.
