Rothensee is located north of Magdeburg and is known for its famous boat lift, which is a true work of art due to its technical design. Historically, the construction of the ship lift was a milestone in water transport technology; however, it was decommissioned in 2006 because the structure’s dimensions are too small for today’s ships. For these reasons, the ship lift now serves only as a monument.

The city of Bremen, together with its northern outpost Bremerhaven, forms Germany’s smallest federal state.
