Danube Moments to Budapest

About This Cruise

From the vineyard landscapes of the Wachau to the great cities along the Danube, VIVA MOMENTS takes you from Passau to Budapest and back. This seven-night journey combines striking architecture, living history and relaxing hours on the water. Departures from May to July offer long days for exploring ashore and enjoying the changing river views from your ship.

The passage through the Wachau introduces the variety of the Danube scenery before you arrive in Krems. Historic lanes and the region's wine heritage give this Austrian town its character. In Vienna, grand façades and imperial history meet coffee-house traditions and lively city streets. Take time for a walk, pause at a café and find your own favourite corner of the capital.

A highlight is Budapest, where your ship stays overnight. The river, its bridges and the distinctive buildings on both banks create a memorable setting for your visit. With an evening in port, you can appreciate another side of the Hungarian capital and enjoy its atmosphere at an unhurried pace.

On the return journey, Komárom introduces another Hungarian destination before Bratislava welcomes you with old-town lanes and views of its castle. Melk, with its abbey rising above the town, provides a striking final stop. Between discoveries ashore, settle back into life on board and watch the scenery unfold. Return to Passau with memories of cultural encounters, varied river landscapes and peaceful moments on the Danube.

Itinerary

Germany

Passau

Thanks to its unique geographical location at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, Passau is undoubtedly one of Germany’s most unique cities. But it’s not just the location of this “City of Three Rivers” that is extraordinary—Passau also offers its visitors numerous remarkable sights. Towering over the city is the Veste Oberhaus, an impressive 13th-century fortress. Passau’s Old Town is known for its beautiful Baroque architecture, most notably St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its distinctive onion domes and the world’s largest cathedral organ, featuring nearly 18,000 pipes.

The small river valley is just 36 kilometers long, but it promises great experiences and is bursting with superlatives: UNESCO World Heritage, stunning white wines and historic buildings. Between Melk and Krems, an incomparable idyll lies on the untamed flowing Danube, medieval castles perch on bizarre rock formations and apricot groves invite you to relax. Nature and  culture in a confined space.

Austria

Vienna

Austria’s capital is one of those cities that every traveler should visit at least once in their lifetime. Hardly any other city in the world offers such an enchanting combination of magnificent architecture, world-famous museums and theaters, and beautiful green spaces. It’s no wonder that Vienna’s entire city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vienna is known worldwide for its palaces of emperors, kings, and nobles, such as Schönbrunn Palace, the Belvedere, and the Hofburg. But the city’s many churches—especially St. Stephen’s Cathedral, its iconic landmark—are also well worth a visit. Museum lovers will certainly get their money’s worth at the city’s numerous world-class museums, such as the Albertina, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Leopold Museum.

Hungary

Budapest

“Pearl of the Danube” or perhaps “Paris of the East”? One thing is certain: Budapest has so much to offer! Even from a distance, the Parliament Building, situated on the riverbank, greets visitors and allows the Hungarian capital to shine in its former glory. The imposing Chain Bridge invites you to explore the Buda and Pest districts, which are adorned with Art Nouveau buildings, wide boulevards, and historic thermal baths. After enjoying a slice of the famous Baumkuchen, you can appreciate the breathtaking view from Castle Hill—with its Royal Palace and the impressive Fisherman’s Bastion—even more.

Slovakia

Bratislava

The capital of Slovakia lies on the border with Austria and Hungary. Approximately 450,000 people live there. Bratislava’s Old Town dates back to the 18th century and, thanks to its car-free zone, is perfect for strolling. The city’s famous dark beer is served in the local cafés and bars. Perched on a hill is Bratislava’s landmark—Bratislava Castle. From its terrace, you have the best view of the city and the Danube.

Austria

Melk

Melk has earned itself a lovely nickname: the gateway to the Wachau. Anyone approaching this historic town along the Danube will soon spot Melk Abbey, which towers high above the river. The abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is worth a visit in every season. This impressive Baroque complex has been cared for by monks of the Benedictine Order since 1089. Culture, faith, and scholarship come together in the monastery’s magnificent halls.
