Nuremberg

Nuremberg is an independent city in Bavaria, not far from Fürth. Even today, you can still see the medieval architecture that runs throughout the city. The old city walls and the Imperial Castle tell of days long past. Nuremberg is famous for its Christmas market. The Christkind heralds the start of the Advent and Christmas market season. The classic Christstollen is world-famous and a real treat. Numerous museums, such as the Albrecht Dürer House and the Toy Museum, are popular attractions in the city.

Bamberg

The UNESCO World Heritage city of Bamberg enchants its visitors with a stunning old town that invites you to stroll and explore. The Sandstrasse, the city’s most famous street, runs through the old town and is home to the Schlenkerla Brewery, which has been in operation since 1405. The brewery’s restaurant is legendary, and here locals and tourists alike enjoy themselves over Rauchbier and Bamberg-style onion dishes. Towering above Sandstrasse is the Romanesque Bamberg Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George. It is known as the Imperial Cathedral because the imperial couple, Henry and Kunigunde, are buried here. The Imperial Cathedral also houses the only papal tomb north of the Alps.

High above the Main River stands the city’s landmark, visible from afar: Marienberg Fortress. For centuries, it served as the seat of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. Even a stroll across the Old Main Bridge, with its oversized stone figures, is an experience in itself. From Marienberg, a magnificent panoramic view opens up over the vineyards and the towers of some 60 churches. The Würzburg Residence, the city palace of the prince-bishops, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as early as 1981. During a visit to the Baroque palace complex on the outskirts of downtown, the Hofgarten reveals itself as a green jewel.

The small town of Wertheim is located where the Tauber River flows into the Main. Magnificent half-timbered buildings characterize the market square. Among the town’s attractions is the parish church, which dates back to the Gothic period. Inside, the Counts of Wertheim—who ruled here from the 15th to the 18th century—have found their final resting place. Other tourist attractions include the Glass Museum and a stately castle that towers over the town from a hilltop.

The city of Aschaffenburg is located directly on the Main River and is known for its beautiful Johannisburg Castle with its large gardens. High above the city, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Main Valley. The Pompejanum is a replica of a Roman villa and, just like the castle, is open to visitors. Schönbrunn Park dates back to the 18th century and has been lovingly landscaped and maintained. A boat tour on the Main River allows you to explore the city’s sights from the water.

The city of Mannheim is located on the Rhine, directly across from Ludwigshafen in Baden-Württemberg. The castle is the city’s landmark and is situated not far from the river.
