Itinerary

Germany

Passau

Thanks to its unique geographical location at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, Passau is undoubtedly one of Germany’s most unique cities. But it’s not just the location of this “City of Three Rivers” that is extraordinary—Passau also offers its visitors numerous remarkable sights. Towering over the city is the Veste Oberhaus, an impressive 13th-century fortress. Passau’s Old Town is known for its beautiful Baroque architecture, most notably St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its distinctive onion domes and the world’s largest cathedral organ, featuring nearly 18,000 pipes.

Germany

Regensburg

Regensburg is a truly special city: With over 1,000 historic buildings, the city at the northernmost point of the Danube is the only surviving medieval metropolis in Germany. Due to its beauty and historical significance, the city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006. Regensburg’s landmark is the 12th-century Stone Bridge, which spans the Danube with 16 arches over a length of more than 300 meters. Another major attraction in the city is the 13th-century Gothic cathedral with its twin towers. Also well-known throughout Germany is the Walhalla, located just outside the city gates, a memorial honoring prominent figures.

Germany

Nuremberg

Nuremberg is an independent city in Bavaria, not far from Fürth. Even today, you can still see the medieval architecture that runs throughout the city. The old city walls and the Imperial Castle tell of days long past. Nuremberg is famous for its Christmas market. The Christkind heralds the start of the Advent and Christmas market season. The classic Christstollen is world-famous and a real treat. Numerous museums, such as the Albrecht Dürer House and the Toy Museum, are popular attractions in the city.

Germany

Bamberg

The UNESCO World Heritage city of Bamberg enchants its visitors with a stunning old town that invites you to stroll and explore. The Sandstrasse, the city’s most famous street, runs through the old town and is home to the Schlenkerla Brewery, which has been in operation since 1405. The brewery’s restaurant is legendary, and here locals and tourists alike enjoy themselves over Rauchbier and Bamberg-style onion dishes. Towering above Sandstrasse is the Romanesque Bamberg Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George. It is known as the Imperial Cathedral because the imperial couple, Henry and Kunigunde, are buried here. The Imperial Cathedral also houses the only papal tomb north of the Alps.

Germany

Würzburg

High above the Main River stands the city’s landmark, visible from afar: Marienberg Fortress. For centuries, it served as the seat of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. Even a stroll across the Old Main Bridge, with its oversized stone figures, is an experience in itself. From Marienberg, a magnificent panoramic view opens up over the vineyards and the towers of some 60 churches. The Würzburg Residence, the city palace of the prince-bishops, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as early as 1981. During a visit to the Baroque palace complex on the outskirts of downtown, the Hofgarten reveals itself as a green jewel.

Germany

Wertheim

The small town of Wertheim is located where the Tauber River flows into the Main. Magnificent half-timbered buildings characterize the market square. Among the town’s attractions is the parish church, which dates back to the Gothic period. Inside, the Counts of Wertheim—who ruled here from the 15th to the 18th century—have found their final resting place. Other tourist attractions include the Glass Museum and a stately castle that towers over the town from a hilltop.

Germany

Frankfurt

Connected to the Danube via the Main-Danube Canal, Frankfurt is one of Germany’s most unique cities. After all, it is the only city with a skyline of skyscrapers. A view of the metropolis from the MAIN TOWER’s observation deck is a truly special experience. But Frankfurt isn’t just a very modern and bustling city—it also has a wealth of history to offer its visitors. The Römer and St. Paul’s Church are among Germany’s most famous historical landmarks. And when it comes to art and culture, Frankfurt is an absolute hotspot. With nearly 40 museums and exhibition venues, Frankfurt’s Museumsufer is one of the most important international museum districts.

Germany

Lorelei

In the heart of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the bronze statue of the Loreley sits perched atop a slate cliff, glistening seductively in the evening sunlight. The myth, described by figures ranging from Clemens Brentano to Heinrich Heine, is linked to a natural phenomenon that in earlier times proved fatal to many sailors: the rocky reefs draw nearer, the Rhine begins to surge, and heads toward a sharp bend. Numerous ruins, castles, and wine-growing villages bear witness to this impressive spectacle, which remains unmatched in its drama and romance to this day.

Germany

Koblenz

Koblenz captivates visitors with its unique location at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. The first stop on any visit to the city should therefore be the so-called “Deutsches Eck” with its imposing Kaiser Wilhelm Monument. Since 2002, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Upper Middle Rhine Valley.” A visit to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress offers a beautiful view of Koblenz and its two rivers. Perched 120 meters above the Rhine, this 16th-century fortification is the second-largest surviving fortress in Europe. Even the ride up in a cable car gondola is spectacular.

Germany

Düsseldorf

The Rhineland way of life, blending tradition and modernity—Düsseldorf captivates with its diversity! Art and culture lovers are just as enthralled here as shopping enthusiasts; the Media Harbor impresses with its contemporary architecture, as does the historic Old Town. With more than 250 cozy pubs, the Old Town makes Düsseldorf the “longest bar in the world.” And it’s not just the traditional Altbier that tastes great there! Don’t miss a stroll down Königsallee, the world-famous shopping boulevard—or perhaps you’d prefer a visit to one of the many charming flea markets? And right in the middle of it all: plenty of green space and the Rhine with its riverside promenade, perfect for taking a deep breath. No wonder the VIVA family feels right at home here!
