Imperial Grandeur Along the Danube

Imperial Grandeur Along the Danube

About This Cruise

The river cruise begins in Passau, the “City of Three Rivers,” where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz meet. Baroque churches, narrow streets, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its grand organ set the tone.

The first stop is Krems, in the Wachau Valley, known for historic houses, vineyards, and a charming old town.

In Vienna, imperial grandeur unfolds. Schönbrunn Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the Ringstrasse with its opera and palaces showcase the city’s cultural richness, complemented by coffee houses and music traditions.

Budapest is another highlight: elegant Buda with Castle Hill and Fisherman’s Bastion contrasts with bustling Pest and its Parliament. An evening cruise past illuminated landmarks is unforgettable.

The ship then calls at Komárom, a historic border town shaped by fortresses and cultural heritage.

Next is Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital. The old town with colorful houses and lively squares invites exploration, while the castle above the river offers panoramic views.

On the way back, Melk impresses with its baroque Benedictine Abbey, towering above the Danube.

Finally, the journey ends in Passau, leaving travelers with memories of culture, history, and scenic beauty across four countries.

Itinerary

Germany

Passau

Thanks to its unique geographical location at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, Passau is undoubtedly one of Germany’s most unique cities. But it’s not just the location of this “City of Three Rivers” that is extraordinary—Passau also offers its visitors numerous remarkable sights. Towering over the city is the Veste Oberhaus, an impressive 13th-century fortress. Passau’s Old Town is known for its beautiful Baroque architecture, most notably St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its distinctive onion domes and the world’s largest cathedral organ, featuring nearly 18,000 pipes.

Austria

Krems

Krems is considered one of Austria’s oldest cities: it was first mentioned as “Chremisa” as early as 995, and documents from 1305 confirm that Krems and Stein were granted city rights. This centuries-long history, which has always been closely intertwined with the Danube, is reflected in the old towns, which—together with the Wachau region—have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since the year 2000. A stroll through Krems and Stein offers plenty to discover: whether it’s the many churches from different eras or the narrow, cobblestone streets and picturesque squares with their historic buildings, statues, and small monuments—anyone who walks through Krems and Stein with their eyes open will be richly rewarded! If the weather in the Wachau happens to be less than ideal, the museums along the Krems Art Mile offer a varied program for young and old alike.

Austria

Vienna

Austria’s capital is one of those cities that every traveler should visit at least once in their lifetime. Hardly any other city in the world offers such an enchanting combination of magnificent architecture, world-famous museums and theaters, and beautiful green spaces. It’s no wonder that Vienna’s entire city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vienna is known worldwide for its palaces of emperors, kings, and nobles, such as Schönbrunn Palace, the Belvedere, and the Hofburg. But the city’s many churches—especially St. Stephen’s Cathedral, its iconic landmark—are also well worth a visit. Museum lovers will certainly get their money’s worth at the city’s numerous world-class museums, such as the Albertina, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Leopold Museum.

Hungary

Budapest

“Pearl of the Danube” or perhaps “Paris of the East”? One thing is certain: Budapest has so much to offer! Even from a distance, the Parliament Building, situated on the riverbank, greets visitors and allows the Hungarian capital to shine in its former glory. The imposing Chain Bridge invites you to explore the Buda and Pest districts, which are adorned with Art Nouveau buildings, wide boulevards, and historic thermal baths. After enjoying a slice of the famous Baumkuchen, you can appreciate the breathtaking view from Castle Hill—with its Royal Palace and the impressive Fisherman’s Bastion—even more.

Slovakia

Bratislava

The capital of Slovakia lies on the border with Austria and Hungary. Approximately 450,000 people live there. Bratislava’s Old Town dates back to the 18th century and, thanks to its car-free zone, is perfect for strolling. The city’s famous dark beer is served in the local cafés and bars. Perched on a hill is Bratislava’s landmark—Bratislava Castle. From its terrace, you have the best view of the city and the Danube.

Austria

Melk

Melk has earned itself a lovely nickname: the gateway to the Wachau. Anyone approaching this historic town along the Danube will soon spot Melk Abbey, which towers high above the river. The abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is worth a visit in every season. This impressive Baroque complex has been cared for by monks of the Benedictine Order since 1089. Culture, faith, and scholarship come together in the monastery’s magnificent halls.
