Imperial Danube Moments

Imperial Danube Moments

About This Cruise

Grand cities, vineyard landscapes and riverside history await aboard VIVA TIARA. Departing from Passau, spend seven nights exploring the Danube to Budapest and back. From late summer into autumn, the changing scenery gives each journey its own character. Between discoveries ashore, relax on board and appreciate the rhythm of travelling by water.

The passage through the Wachau opens your journey with views of slopes and riverside towns. In Krems, discover historic lanes and the region's wine heritage. Vienna then brings imperial history together with lively city life. Admire grand façades, explore at your own pace and take time for a leisurely break in a traditional coffee house.

A highlight is Budapest, where your ship stays overnight. Bridges and distinctive buildings on both banks define the Hungarian capital's river panorama. The overnight stay allows you to enjoy the city in the evening and linger over its atmosphere without an early departure cutting your visit short.

Continue via Komárom to Bratislava, where old-town streets and views towards the castle invite further discoveries. Melk, with its abbey rising above the town, provides an impressive final stop. On the return to Passau, settle back and reflect on the places you have explored. Bringing together culture, Danube scenery and relaxation, this journey reveals different sides of Austria, Hungary and Slovakia. After seven nights, enjoy breakfast before disembarkation.

Itinerary

Germany

Passau

Thanks to its unique geographical location at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, Passau is undoubtedly one of Germany’s most unique cities. But it’s not just the location of this “City of Three Rivers” that is extraordinary—Passau also offers its visitors numerous remarkable sights. Towering over the city is the Veste Oberhaus, an impressive 13th-century fortress. Passau’s Old Town is known for its beautiful Baroque architecture, most notably St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its distinctive onion domes and the world’s largest cathedral organ, featuring nearly 18,000 pipes.

The small river valley is just 36 kilometers long, but it promises great experiences and is bursting with superlatives: UNESCO World Heritage, stunning white wines and historic buildings. Between Melk and Krems, an incomparable idyll lies on the untamed flowing Danube, medieval castles perch on bizarre rock formations and apricot groves invite you to relax. Nature and  culture in a confined space.

Austria

Vienna

Austria’s capital is one of those cities that every traveler should visit at least once in their lifetime. Hardly any other city in the world offers such an enchanting combination of magnificent architecture, world-famous museums and theaters, and beautiful green spaces. It’s no wonder that Vienna’s entire city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vienna is known worldwide for its palaces of emperors, kings, and nobles, such as Schönbrunn Palace, the Belvedere, and the Hofburg. But the city’s many churches—especially St. Stephen’s Cathedral, its iconic landmark—are also well worth a visit. Museum lovers will certainly get their money’s worth at the city’s numerous world-class museums, such as the Albertina, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Leopold Museum.

Hungary

Budapest

“Pearl of the Danube” or perhaps “Paris of the East”? One thing is certain: Budapest has so much to offer! Even from a distance, the Parliament Building, situated on the riverbank, greets visitors and allows the Hungarian capital to shine in its former glory. The imposing Chain Bridge invites you to explore the Buda and Pest districts, which are adorned with Art Nouveau buildings, wide boulevards, and historic thermal baths. After enjoying a slice of the famous Baumkuchen, you can appreciate the breathtaking view from Castle Hill—with its Royal Palace and the impressive Fisherman’s Bastion—even more.

Slovakia

Bratislava

The capital of Slovakia lies on the border with Austria and Hungary. Approximately 450,000 people live there. Bratislava’s Old Town dates back to the 18th century and, thanks to its car-free zone, is perfect for strolling. The city’s famous dark beer is served in the local cafés and bars. Perched on a hill is Bratislava’s landmark—Bratislava Castle. From its terrace, you have the best view of the city and the Danube.

Austria

Melk

Melk has earned itself a lovely nickname: the gateway to the Wachau. Anyone approaching this historic town along the Danube will soon spot Melk Abbey, which towers high above the river. The abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is worth a visit in every season. This impressive Baroque complex has been cared for by monks of the Benedictine Order since 1089. Culture, faith, and scholarship come together in the monastery’s magnificent halls.
