Lorraine Charm to Düsseldorfof the Elbe and Vltava

About This Cruise

From Lorraine along the Moselle to the Rhine, this ten-night journey from Nancy-Frouard to Düsseldorf combines French charm with historic towns and varied wine-growing landscapes. In late May and early June, the season moves towards summer, while October brings a different mood to the passing riverbanks.

After embarking in Frouard near Nancy, your ship remains until the following afternoon. Next comes Metz, where a stay until the next evening leaves time for discoveries at your own pace. Remich introduces Luxembourg and another perspective on life beside the Moselle, with a generous stay from morning until late evening.

Trier, Bernkastel and Traben-Trarbach bring together history and distinctive townscapes. Explore streets and squares, admire the riverside views and pause between discoveries. Continue via Cochem and Winningen to Koblenz, where the journey leaves the Moselle and joins the Rhine.

Rüdesheim and Cologne add further variety before you arrive in Düsseldorf on the penultimate evening. Your final night on board offers time to reflect on the places you have discovered across three countries. Look forward to culture, river landscapes and relaxing hours on the water, with space to appreciate both the destinations and the scenery between them. From the first impressions of Lorraine to the final stretch along the Rhine, each stage brings something different. After ten nights, your cruise ends with disembarkation after breakfast.

Germany

Trier

Trier impresses with its Roman-era structures—most notably the well-preserved Porta Nigra. But the city’s churches are also worth visiting. Germany’s oldest city was founded by the Romans around 16 B.C. under Emperor Augustus. Charlemagne made the city an archbishopric. In hardly any other German city are the remnants of the Romans as abundant as they are in Trier. You can even drink them in the form of wine. The vineyards on the slopes of the Moselle and Saar valleys look back on 2,000 years of history.

Germany

Bernkastel-Kues

Numerous half-timbered houses adorn the town of Bernkastel, situated right on the Moselle. Perched above the town is a castle with a restaurant, and the old town is home to numerous small boutiques and shops. The Moselle is perfect for an unforgettable boat cruise, as well as for kayaking or canoeing. Bernkastel is known for its ideal location on the Moselle and its quaint old town. Together with Kues, it forms a twin town—on the left and right banks of the Moselle—with numerous restaurants and bars.

Germany

Beilstein

Beilstein is one of the smaller municipalities with around 125 inhabitants, but is nevertheless one of the most popular travel destinations in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. This is due to the fascinating sights and entertaining events, which immediately arouse the interest of vacationers. The climb up to Metternich Castle is a must for many tourists during their stay in Beilstein, as they want to enjoy the fantastic view of the small town. The spur castle dates back to the Middle Ages and is open to visitors every day from April to November from 9 am to 6 pm. Another attraction in Beilstein is the Carmelite Church of St. Joseph, which was built in the Baroque style at the transition from the 17th to the 18th century and has a lot to offer in terms of architecture. The church is a place of pilgrimage. This is due to the oldest exhibit in the church, which is the Black Madonna of Beilstein. Beilstein is a highly recommended travel destination and is considered an insider tip for tourists looking for an exciting vacation destination outside of the big cities, mountain and coastal regions.

Germany

Rüdesheim

The picturesque town of Rüdesheim is located right on the Rhine in Hesse and boasts numerous attractions, such as the famous Drosselgasse, which is lined with wine bars, as well as a castle and a torture museum that displays medieval instruments of torture and tells the history of the Inquisition. A cable car takes you up to the Niederwald Monument, which is located above the town. From here, you can take a beautiful hike through pristine forest areas and then reach the chairlift that leads directly to Assmannshausen. This town is also located on the Rhine.

Germany

Cologne

Cologne is a city with independent municipal status in North Rhine-Westphalia and is one of the few cities in the Federal Republic of Germany with a population of over one million. Cologne Cathedral is the city’s landmark, located directly on the banks of the Rhine and next to the main train station. A cable car crosses the Rhine, offering a fantastic view of the city. The local zoo and the stadium are real attractions for young and old alike. Carnival is an important part of life here and is just as much a part of the city’s character as a traditional brewery.

Germany

Düsseldorf

The Rhineland way of life, blending tradition and modernity—Düsseldorf captivates with its diversity! Art and culture lovers are just as enthralled here as shopping enthusiasts; the Media Harbor impresses with its contemporary architecture, as does the historic Old Town. With more than 250 cozy pubs, the Old Town makes Düsseldorf the “longest bar in the world.” And it’s not just the traditional Altbier that tastes great there! Don’t miss a stroll down Königsallee, the world-famous shopping boulevard—or perhaps you’d prefer a visit to one of the many charming flea markets? And right in the middle of it all: plenty of green space and the Rhine with its riverside promenade, perfect for taking a deep breath. No wonder the VIVA family feels right at home here!
