Through the Iron Gates

Through the Iron Gates

About This Cruise

Follow the Danube to the Iron Gates region: VIVA TWO brings together capitals, cultural landscapes and new perspectives on southeastern Europe on an eleven-night round trip from Passau. In spring or late summer, travel via Bratislava and Hungary to Belgrade. An excursion from Kalocsa explores the Puszta, before the Serbian capital offers a programme centred on Beli Dvor. The turning point at the Trajan Tablet makes the scenery of the Iron Gates a highlight of the route. From Donji Milanovac, an offered excursion to Lepenski Vir and Golubac opens up richer discoveries. On the return journey, visit Novi Sad, Ilok and the planned stop in Osijek. A fortress viewpoint, wine tasting and a walk exploring Art Nouveau give the excursion options different themes. Budapest, Hainburg and Vienna follow with more opportunities to discover cities and their history. Schloss Hof is among the options from Hainburg. Melk and a passage through the Wachau accompany the final stretch back to Passau. Between visits, enjoy the changing views along the banks and let each experience settle into memory. A lecture and folklore show are planned for Belgrade, while a Signature Dinner adds to the programme. Twelve days leave room for culture, conversation and long relaxing hours on the water. Whether you choose excursions or explore independently, this journey connects familiar Danube destinations with discoveries beyond the classic capitals. Let the river lead you towards places that invite a closer look.

Itinerary

Germany

Passau

Thanks to its unique geographical location at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, Passau is undoubtedly one of Germany’s most unique cities. But it’s not just the location of this “City of Three Rivers” that is extraordinary—Passau also offers its visitors numerous remarkable sights. Towering over the city is the Veste Oberhaus, an impressive 13th-century fortress. Passau’s Old Town is known for its beautiful Baroque architecture, most notably St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its distinctive onion domes and the world’s largest cathedral organ, featuring nearly 18,000 pipes.

Slovakia

Bratislava

The capital of Slovakia lies on the border with Austria and Hungary. Approximately 450,000 people live there. Bratislava’s Old Town dates back to the 18th century and, thanks to its car-free zone, is perfect for strolling. The city’s famous dark beer is served in the local cafés and bars. Perched on a hill is Bratislava’s landmark—Bratislava Castle. From its terrace, you have the best view of the city and the Danube.

Hungary

Serbia

Belgrade

The “White City”—as the Serbian name Belgrade, is anything but colorless. Its turbulent pastshapes this Balkan metropolis. The scars of that era are just as much a part of the cityscape as the spirit of optimism that can be felt and seen. Belgrade is home to about 1.7 million residents—and, with the monumental Cathedral of Saint Sava, is home to one one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. A stroll down the shopping street Knez Mihailova with its shops, cafés, and an exciting mix of architectural styles leads straight to the Belgrade Fortress. Here, you can not only view down to the mouth of the Sava River, but also the tranquility of the sprawling Kalemegdan Park.

Serbia

Donji Milanovac

The small town of Donji Milanovac in eastern Serbia lies directly on the right bank of the Danube. When the dam and hydroelectric power plant were built in 1970, the town had to be relocated to higher ground. This was already the second relocation; the first took place in 1830, when the town was moved from the Danube Island to a higher location due to frequent flooding. North of Donji Milanovac, visitors can explore the approximately 9,000-year-old archaeological site of Lepenski Vir, dating from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods.

Serbia

Novi Sad

Novi Sad is Serbia’s second-largest city and is located on the Danube. It’s the perfect place to stop and explore attractions such as the Petrovaradin Fortress. One of the best-preserved fortresses in Europe, it features a system of catacombs and is situated on a hill. A stroll through the city center, with its narrow alleys, quaint cafés, and Neo-Renaissance-style city hall, is also highly recommended.

Croatia

Osijek

The city of Osijek with about 108,000 inhabitants is Croatia's fourth largest city and is located on the Drava River about 20 km before it flows into the Danube. It belongs to the historical region of Slavonia, one of its sights is the Museum of Slavonia. Worth seeing in Osijek are also the nature park Kopacki rit, the baroque fortress Tvrda, the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul and the Zoological Garden with its very impressive aquarium.

Hungary

Budapest

“Pearl of the Danube” or perhaps “Paris of the East”? One thing is certain: Budapest has so much to offer! Even from a distance, the Parliament Building, situated on the riverbank, greets visitors and allows the Hungarian capital to shine in its former glory. The imposing Chain Bridge invites you to explore the Buda and Pest districts, which are adorned with Art Nouveau buildings, wide boulevards, and historic thermal baths. After enjoying a slice of the famous Baumkuchen, you can appreciate the breathtaking view from Castle Hill—with its Royal Palace and the impressive Fisherman’s Bastion—even more.

Austria

Hainburg

Hainburg, a picturesque town on the Danube in Austria, impresses with its well-preserved medieval town walls and charming old town. Surrounded by green hills and located right next to the Donau-Auen National Park, Hainburg invites you to follow in its historical footsteps and enjoy the natural beauty of its surroundings. A visit to Hainburg also reveals the mighty Wienertor, one of the oldest and largest city gates in Europe, which offers a fascinating insight into the history of the city. The relaxed atmosphere and the view of the calmly flowing Danube make Hainburg an idyllic stop on your river cruise.

Austria

Vienna

Austria’s capital is one of those cities that every traveler should visit at least once in their lifetime. Hardly any other city in the world offers such an enchanting combination of magnificent architecture, world-famous museums and theaters, and beautiful green spaces. It’s no wonder that Vienna’s entire city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vienna is known worldwide for its palaces of emperors, kings, and nobles, such as Schönbrunn Palace, the Belvedere, and the Hofburg. But the city’s many churches—especially St. Stephen’s Cathedral, its iconic landmark—are also well worth a visit. Museum lovers will certainly get their money’s worth at the city’s numerous world-class museums, such as the Albertina, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Leopold Museum.

Austria

Melk

Melk has earned itself a lovely nickname: the gateway to the Wachau. Anyone approaching this historic town along the Danube will soon spot Melk Abbey, which towers high above the river. The abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is worth a visit in every season. This impressive Baroque complex has been cared for by monks of the Benedictine Order since 1089. Culture, faith, and scholarship come together in the monastery’s magnificent halls.

Germany
