Itinerary

France

Lyon

To this day, Lyon—France’s second-largest city—remains in the shadow of the French capital, Paris, when it comes to tourism. Yet this is entirely unjustified. If you travel to Lyon, France, you’ll experience a wonderful blend of a historic old town, excellent cuisine, numerous festivals, and picturesque surroundings. Strolling through the alleys of Lyon’s Old Town is a true pleasure. In the alleys and streets, which are characterized by medieval and Renaissance styles, there is something new to discover around every corner. A distinctive feature of Lyon are the so-called “traboules”—passages and stairwells that allow you to walk through buildings and courtyards from one street to another. Thanks to its extensive historic architecture, large parts of Lyon are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

France

Tournon-sur-Rhône

Tournon is a French municipality in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region with a population of about 10,000. The Rhône, one of the country’s longest rivers, flows through the town. Vernon Castle is partially designated as a historic monument and houses a museum. In the 16th century, the French heir to the throne, François de France, died in the castle. In the historic district, which is perfect for strolling, traces of the nobility can still be seen today. The Jardin d’Eden truly lives up to its name.

France

Avignon

Who isn’t familiar with the French folk song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon,” which made the city on the left bank of the Rhône world-famous? But Avignon truly came into its own in the 14th century, when the pope sought exile there due to war and unrest. True to the motto “Where the Pope is, there is Rome,” a glorious golden age began, marked by the construction of Gothic monasteries and churches. With its crenellated parapets and massive towers, the monumental Papal Palace resembles a fortress and serves as a unique backdrop for an annual theater festival. But it’s not just art lovers who are drawn to the picturesque lavender landscape of Provence—it also attracts those who enjoy the finer things in life.

France

Arles

Relics from Roman times, medieval artifacts, and Romanesque architecture: Arles, on the banks of the Rhône, invites visitors on a journey through the ages and, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands on the threshold of eternity. Just outside the gates of “Little Rome,” the Camargue landscape unfolds with its pink flamingos, white wild horses, and vast sand dunes. Even van Gogh was inspired by the play of colors in Provence and captivated by the city’s Mediterranean charm. Art lovers can follow in the master’s footsteps along marked routes and stop for a drink at the famous “Nachtcafé” on the Place du Forum. Today, the former seat of Emperor Barbarossa’s government is a place brimming with possibilities, where monumental buildings harmonize with modern museums.

France

Viviers

Vivier, situated on the right bank of the Rhône, has the air of a sleeping beauty. The historic town center has been preserved and provides a fairy-tale backdrop for a journey back to times long past. A stroll through winding alleyways leads from the lower town—where merchants and artisans lived in the Middle Ages—to the upper town, the former refuge of the wealthy and the clergy. Here, you can discover new details time and again on the richly decorated façade of the Maison des Chevaliers. From France’s smallest cathedral, the Cathédrale Saint-Vincent, it’s not far to the Belvédère de Châteauvieux. The excursion is rewarded with a breathtaking view over the city’s tiled roofs and the Rhône Valley.
