Itinerary

Switzerland

Basel

Basel is a city of striking contrasts. In this city located on the border between Switzerland, Germany, and France, visitors experience a unique blend of more than 2,000 years of history and modernity. In Basel’s cityscape, historic buildings from the 15th century complement state-of-the-art architecture to create a dynamic yet harmonious overall picture. The city’s main attraction is the 800-year-old Basel Cathedral. Directly behind the cathedral, the Pfalz offers a magnificent view of the Old Town and the famous Mittlere Brücke spanning the Rhine. The Red Town Hall and the Spalentor are also must-see attractions during a visit to the city. Last but not least, Basel’s approximately 40 museums are a major draw for art and culture lovers from all over Europe.

Germany

Breisach

Although large parts of the city were almost completely destroyed during World War II, Breisach boasts a wealth of beautiful sights. St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the city’s symbol, captivates visitors with its famous treasures. The striking Rheintor, which has been converted into a museum, offers a compelling glimpse into the city’s history. If that doesn’t convince you, then an extensive tour featuring romantic and historic churches will. Culture lovers will find plenty to enjoy here.

France

Strasbourg

From the very first minute, the French city of Strasbourg enchants visitors with its colorful, idyllic half-timbered architecture, Wilhelminian-style grandeur, trendy new neighborhoods, and fascinating museums. Even a short visit leaves a lasting impression thanks to all the inspiration it offers! In the picturesque La Petite France district, you can savor the moment with a slice of tarte flambée before the imposing cathedral, with its stained-glass windows and arcades, invites you on a journey back in time to the Gothic era. If you’re not afraid of heights, you should definitely climb the 332 steps up to the observation deck to catch a glimpse of the Vosges and the Black Forest in the distance.

Germany

Speyer

The 2000-year-old Speyer resembles a single open-air museum: Salian history at every turn. The cathedral city on the Rhine is proud of its favorable location in the heart of Europe. The many-towered silhouette of the mighty red sandstone cathedral towers over the city. Anyone visiting the cathedral should also descend the steps to the imperial crypt. The most important sights of the old imperial city are almost all located in the city center, which makes it possible to admire them during a nice walk through the city. Those who are tired of walking can stop in one of the countless restaurants and cafes.

Germany

Bingen am Rhein

The city of Bingen, located in Rhineland-Palatinate, is home to the worth seeing Mäuseturm, which is located on an island in the Rhine, and in which allegedly the Archbishop of Mainz Hatto von mice were eaten. But also the castle Klopp and the Basilica of St. Martin are worth a visit. In addition, you come quite quickly by ferry to Rüdesheim, which, like Bingen, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Bingen with its castles is the entrance to the Middle Rhine Valley. Here you can enjoy after strolling through the city, locally grown wine in a restaurant or bar.

Germany

Koblenz

Koblenz captivates visitors with its unique location at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. The first stop on any visit to the city should therefore be the so-called “Deutsches Eck” with its imposing Kaiser Wilhelm Monument. Since 2002, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Upper Middle Rhine Valley.” A visit to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress offers a beautiful view of Koblenz and its two rivers. Perched 120 meters above the Rhine, this 16th-century fortification is the second-largest surviving fortress in Europe. Even the ride up in a cable car gondola is spectacular.

Germany

Cochem

Cochem is Germany’s smallest county seat and is located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Cochem lies on the Moselle River and is famous for its winegrowing. The town offers a picturesque view of the vineyards. Even from a distance, the Reichsburg Castle is clearly visible and serves as the town’s landmark. The town is popular not only with bowling clubs and families. The cobblestone-paved old town offers a pleasant stroll and invites visitors to linger by the fountain.

Germany

Bernkastel-Kues

Numerous half-timbered houses adorn the town of Bernkastel, situated right on the Moselle. Perched above the town is a castle with a restaurant, and the old town is home to numerous small boutiques and shops. The Moselle is perfect for an unforgettable boat cruise, as well as for kayaking or canoeing. Bernkastel is known for its ideal location on the Moselle and its quaint old town. Together with Kues, it forms a twin town—on the left and right banks of the Moselle—with numerous restaurants and bars.

Germany

Trier

Trier impresses with its Roman-era structures—most notably the well-preserved Porta Nigra. But the city’s churches are also worth visiting. Germany’s oldest city was founded by the Romans around 16 B.C. under Emperor Augustus. Charlemagne made the city an archbishopric. In hardly any other German city are the remnants of the Romans as abundant as they are in Trier. You can even drink them in the form of wine. The vineyards on the slopes of the Moselle and Saar valleys look back on 2,000 years of history.
