About the Trip

In September, the wine country along the Rhine and Moselle reveals its most atmospheric side. Your journey begins in Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle converge and the view of the surrounding hills already offers a first glimpse of this traditional wine region. The journey continues to Bacharach, where historic houses, winding alleys, and a location nestled between vineyards and the river create a particularly romantic atmosphere.

In Mainz, wine culture, history, and vibrant urban life come together. The journey then takes you through one of the Rhine’s most famous stretches. The stretch near the Loreley is one of the scenic highlights and impressively demonstrates how closely the river, steep vineyards, and centuries-old cultural landscape are intertwined. Boppard complements these impressions with its historic town center and the surrounding vineyards.

Cochem marks the beginning of another particularly charming stretch along the Moselle. The winding banks, steep vineyards, and the striking Reichsburg Castle define the landscape. Around Treis-Karden, the river landscape becomes even more tranquil and unspoiled.

September lends the journey a special atmosphere with its warm light, ripening grapes, and the first hints of golden hues. Thus, this wine tour combines the romance of the Rhine, the Moselle landscape, and centuries-old wine culture into an enjoyable experience before you return to Koblenz.

Itinerary

Germany

Koblenz

Koblenz captivates visitors with its unique location at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. The first stop on any visit to the city should therefore be the so-called “Deutsches Eck” with its imposing Kaiser Wilhelm Monument. Since 2002, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Upper Middle Rhine Valley.” A visit to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress offers a beautiful view of Koblenz and its two rivers. Perched 120 meters above the Rhine, this 16th-century fortification is the second-largest surviving fortress in Europe. Even the ride up in a cable car gondola is spectacular.

Germany

Rüdesheim

The picturesque town of Rüdesheim is located right on the Rhine in Hesse and boasts numerous attractions, such as the famous Drosselgasse, which is lined with wine bars, as well as a castle and a torture museum that displays medieval instruments of torture and tells the history of the Inquisition. A cable car takes you up to the Niederwald Monument, which is located above the town. From here, you can take a beautiful hike through pristine forest areas and then reach the chairlift that leads directly to Assmannshausen. This town is also located on the Rhine.

Germany

Mainz

Mainz, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, lies directly on the Rhine. The impressive St. Martin’s Cathedral is just one of the city’s many special attractions, along with numerous monuments and fountains. Spacious parks and green spaces invite visitors to take leisurely strolls. A visit to the Electoral Palace is not to be missed. Historic buildings bear witness to an eventful history, from its beginnings in Roman times 2,000 years ago to the modern era. The Haus zum Stein in the city center is the oldest surviving residential building in Mainz dating from the Middle Ages.

Germany

Lorelei

In the heart of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the bronze statue of the Loreley sits perched atop a slate cliff, glistening seductively in the evening sunlight. The myth, described by figures ranging from Clemens Brentano to Heinrich Heine, is linked to a natural phenomenon that in earlier times proved fatal to many sailors: the rocky reefs draw nearer, the Rhine begins to surge, and heads toward a sharp bend. Numerous ruins, castles, and wine-growing villages bear witness to this impressive spectacle, which remains unmatched in its drama and romance to this day.

Germany

Boppard

The town of Boppard is located in the Middle Rhine Valley and features many small shops, a beautiful old town, and a medieval tower. High above this small town on the Rhine stands a majestic castle, one of many in the Middle Rhine Valley. You feel as if you’ve been transported back to the Middle Ages. Boppard is connected to the Rhine towns in Hesse by a small ferry. There isn’t a single bridge between Mainz and Koblenz, as the Middle Rhine Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Germany

Cochem

Cochem is Germany’s smallest county seat and is located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Cochem lies on the Moselle River and is famous for its winegrowing. The town offers a picturesque view of the vineyards. Even from a distance, the Reichsburg Castle is clearly visible and serves as the town’s landmark. The town is popular not only with bowling clubs and families. The cobblestone-paved old town offers a pleasant stroll and invites visitors to linger by the fountain.

Germany

Treis-Karden

The picturesque little town of Treis-Karden is located right on the Moselle River in one of Germany’s most beautiful regions. It’s particularly well-known among vacationers and hikers for its proximity to Eltz Castle. However, if you don’t have enough time for a hike, there are plenty of exciting sights to discover right within the town: For example, you can visit the Maria Engelport Monastery and attend Mass or even concerts. You can also explore the chapel or the so-called Lourdes Grotto there. Furthermore, it’s worth visiting St. Castor Church—known as the Mosel Cathedral—as well as the fountain of the same name, complete with its sculpture.
