Wertheim

The small town of Wertheim is located where the Tauber River flows into the Main. Magnificent half-timbered buildings characterize the market square. Among the town’s attractions is the parish church, which dates back to the Gothic period. Inside, the Counts of Wertheim—who ruled here from the 15th to the 18th century—have found their final resting place. Other tourist attractions include the Glass Museum and a stately castle that towers over the town from a hilltop.

High above the Main River stands the city’s landmark, visible from afar: Marienberg Fortress. For centuries, it served as the seat of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. Even a stroll across the Old Main Bridge, with its oversized stone figures, is an experience in itself. From Marienberg, a magnificent panoramic view opens up over the vineyards and the towers of some 60 churches. The Würzburg Residence, the city palace of the prince-bishops, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as early as 1981.
